oh dear, Marina . . . I have only Google translate to rely on, 🙂 henceforth:

    Nowhere

The place where they were lying, he

A name – he did not

not. They were not lying there. But there was

    thing

    Of lying between them. Them

    Did not see through.

    .

    Did not see, no,

    Talked about

    words. None of them

    Did not wake up, the

    Sleep came on them.

A close friend fluent in French will translate for me, hopefully. I wonder if Celan wrote it originally in French when most poems he wrote in his embattled German.

Dear Donna, it’s not easy for me translate from French to Italy and then from Italy to English, and especially a Celan’ poem, and more Celan!! 🙂
Your friend’s translation is good, is literally translation, but I think that the meaning is deeper.. I don’t know when Celan wrote this poetry, the context in whitch poetry has been written .. So I can say you my little thought… the word “endroit” for me this important, it might : “the place, the right to be in the place , the right place .. love’s place, the homeland, the No-place, no Word .. I don’t know .. however is the place that don’t have a name, but it’s just the relationship between two persons to give it a meaning, the possibility..”
I’m stopping, before my bad translation of Celan’s though gets worse, completely overthrown.
I’ll get more information about this poem, I liked his strange effect, the sensation of Nothing and the contemporary possibility , the same effect of death, but the sweet death as deserved resort, the impossibility or the refusal … the context of the poem will tell us
    more.
I’m sorry, Donna. For my impossibly to write en English, I can’t tell you more.
    Kiss.

I am so moved by your insight, “however is the place that don’t have a name, but it’s just the relationship between two persons to give it a meaning, the possibility.” Marina, my wish is to receive your many gifts including language(s). You think you fumble but you pierce through to the place, in all of us. Do you write?
